Staked Low Stool

As part of a project to hone my hand-tool furniture making tool kit and skill set, I am working through “The Anarchist’s Design book” in my newly raised timber frame shop. Read more about it on the blog.

First in a series of builds working through The Anarchist’s Design Book that I am doing in the winter/spring of 2024 is this staked low stool. I found a countertop off-cut from a kitchen remodel I did a few months ago that was the perfect size for two 13” seats; so I decided to make two: the first in Twilight Milk Paint, the second in Holkham Green Linseed Paint.

The seat is butcher-block Maple, the legs are Red Oak scrap pieces from my shop build. The tapered legs were made with a hand plane, and the circular tenons were cut with an A. A. Wood and Sons adjustable hollow auger tenon cutter. Glued up with Old Brown Glue and finished with an oil/varnish blend and one coat of Milk Paint.
