Plate Rack

As part my ongoing 1924 home remodel, the kitchen has seen periods of neglect and rapid progress. March of 2024 was a month of rapid progress, and saw the installation of beadboard paneling, chair rail moulding, baseboard, quarter round, a pass through bar top, new recessed lights, rearranged utilities, and the removal of all existing cabinetry. The reorganization of the kitchen left me with no room for (or interest in) the old cabinets, and I decided to build several custom pieces to fit my space and needs.

First on the list of things to build was this plate rack. I set the dimensions to fill an open space on the wall between my stove and sink, and decided upon the shelf heights by playing around with various cups and plates until I had a layout that I liked. The curve detail on the bottom shelf is a simple 2/5ths 3/5ths alternating curve. The trim detail at the top was designed around the central rosette, again experimenting with dimensions until a pleasing series of arches that allowed for access to items on the top shelf was achieved.
